How I came to pour concrete in Goleta

I spent every summer through school on a concrete crew, mixing, raking and learning to finish from people who'd done it for decades. I started Goleta Concrete here in 2013, and I still walk every job myself. Most of our calls come from homeowners around Goleta who need flatwork, which covers the driveways, patios, walks and steps around a house. We're best known for slabs that drain right and stay flat. Property owners call us for walls, footings, foundations and lots too.

What I care about most happens before the truck shows up, because once concrete is poured there's no do-over. So I ask a lot of questions first. Where does the water run when it rains? What are you going to park on it? Is there a tree nearby with roots headed this way? I'd rather tell you honestly whether a repair will hold or the slab needs replacing, and why some cracking is normal, than tell you what you want to hear.

Every job starts with what's under the slab. What we plan together is what gets built.

How we run your concrete job

It starts with me walking your property and asking about drainage, roots and what the slab has to carry. We dig out and pack the subgrade, the ground the slab sits on, so your concrete isn't resting on loose dirt, and we slope it so water runs away from the house. At the end we contain the slurry, washout and dust, so none of it ends up in your yard or the storm drain.

Before we pour, I walk you through what I found and the choices it leaves you, like repairing versus replacing. In Goleta, a job that reaches the driveway apron or sidewalk out at the street needs an encroachment permit from the city's Public Works Department before work starts, and I'll tell you up front if yours does.

What you can expect from our concrete crew

Here's what you'll notice when we take on your driveway, patio or walk, from the estimate visit to the day you first walk on it.

  • Same person throughout

The person who walks your property and writes your estimate runs your pour, so the plan we make gets built.

  • Cracks explained first

We lay out control joints, planned lines for the slab to crack along, and explain hairline cracks before we pour.

  • Permits sorted out

We check which office covers your address and, when a permit is needed, handle the application and inspections.

  • Licensed and insured

We're licensed and fully insured, and the state licensing board caps a down payment at $1,000 or 10 percent, whichever is less.
